UPFC with fault current limiting and capacitor voltage limiting

Abstract  

The series converter of unified power flow controller (UPFC) may be damaged when a short circuit fault occurs in the power systems. So, a topology of UPFC with fault current limiting (UPFC-FCL) was proposed by scholars of Zhejiang University, which can protect the series converter from being damaged by fault current. But before the thyristors of FCL turn off completely, the fault current can flow through the diode of IGBT-Module and cause the voltage rise of DC-Capacitor to exceed the voltage level of IGBT-Module, which can also damage the series converter. This paper analysed the path of short circuit current when short circuit fault occurs. Then the mathematical model of short circuit for UPFC-FCL was established. After a brief analysis on the mechanism of the voltage rise of DC-Capacitor when a short circuit occurs, a novel improvement topology of UPFC-FCL was proposed. PSCAD/EMTDC simulation results demonstrate that this new topology can avoid the voltage rise of DC-Capacitor as well as limit the fault current when a short circuit occurs.

具有电容限压功能的限流式统一潮流控制器

针对统一潮流控制器(UPFC)的串联变换器极易因系统发生短路故障而损毁的问题,提出一种具有短路限流功能的UPFC(限流式UPFC)拓扑,可以有效避免串联变换器因系统短路电流冲击而损毁.但当桥式固态限流器晶闸管完全关断之前,短路电流会经过串联变换器IGBT的续流二极管给直流电容充电,电容电压瞬间上升,极有可能超过IGBT的耐压水平而导致串联变换器损毁.分析短路时短路电流的流通路径,建立限流式UPFC的短路数学模型,通过分析短路时电容电压上升的机理,给出一种限流式UPFC的改进方案.PSCAD/EMTDC软件的建模与仿真结果表明,该改进方案在短路限流的同时能够减小甚至避免电容电压上升,进而保护UPFC的串联变换器.
