Abstract In order to solve the complex nonlinear problems of convergence difficulties and severe concussions on cutting soil simulation for EPB cutter, a cutting finite element model was established based on the large-scale nonlinear finite element software and solved by using CEL method. The cutting force was about 80N when using CEL method, while the force was about 50N using the method of EF and ALE. So the result obtained via CEL method was closer to the theoretical result which was 78N and the result was less shocked also. Finally, it was also found that CEL had lower sensitivity to the grid size than EF and ALE by studying the influence of the finite element mesh size on the simulation results, which might contribute to improving the cutting efficiency. In summary, the proposed method is more suitable for the practical engineering situation.
