Initial rotational stiffness formula of semi-rigid joint with T-stub in beam-to-column connection

Abstract:

The deformation characteristics of the joint were analyzed in order to determine the initial stiffness of semi-rigid joint with T-stub. Then the flange of T-stub bolted on the tensile side of the beam section, which was deemed as main research object, was regarded as simply supported beam. The calculation model for the initial rotational stiffness of the joint during elastic phase was established, and the analytical formula of initial rotational stiffness was deduced. Numerical simulation and experimental data were employed for comparison with the results from the proposed formula respectively. Results show that the initial rotational stiffness of the joint mainly depends on the flange thickness of the T-stub, distance between bolts linking the flange of T-stub to steel column, and the height of the beam. The values calculated by the proposed formula are greater than those from numerical simulation and experiments. A stiffness modified coefficient was introduced into the analytical formula to predict the initial rotational stiffness more accurately. The results from modified formula applied for case studies accorded better with the experimental data than those from previous formula proposed by researchers.
