Abstract

Argon plasma jet was generated by a bipolar pulsed power source and a self-made plasma reactor. The diameter and length of plasma jet were 6 mm and 3-5 cm respectively. When pulsed voltage, pulsed frequency, and argon flow rate were 2-5 kV, 1-3 kHz and 33 L/min, the power of plasma jet was 1-6 W. It could rapidly inactivate E. coli bacteria on agar plate in 1-3 min with bactericidal spot of 2-5 cm. For treating 250 μL of aqueous E. coli, up to 6 orders reduction was obtained after 05-20 min. The disinfection efficiency of plasma jet was enhanced by raising the pulsed voltage or frequency as well as inducing the treatment distance. However, plasma power and energy density were essential factors determining the disinfection efficiency.
