The theory of model predictive control was used in order to better adapt to the time-varying characteristics of traffic flow regarding city roundabouts, especially multiple malformation roundabouts. A prediction model of the traffic behavior generated by a dynamic traffic model was constructed. The optimal signal timing parameters of roundabouts were got by optimizing the objective function online in the receding horizon. Then the roundabouts' signal timing scheme with clockwise release order and phase overlapping rules were given. The simulation results show that the proposed control method is more reasonable distribution of time and space resources in roundabouts. The method can effectively avoid the effect of "dead lock" in multiple malformation roundabouts and improve overall performance.
