Bound water measurement methods and moisture distribution within sewage sludge

Abstract  

Relationship between sludge moisture distribution and dewatering performance was studied to achieve effective dewatering of sewage sludge. Five measurement methods, including drying test, filtration test, expression test, sorption isotherms test and dilatometric test were applied to determine the bound water content within a typical sewage sludge sample. Features and applicable conditions of each method were obtained via analysis and comparison of their measurement data and theories. A sludge moisture distribution curve was constructed via analysis of the sludge moisture energy status in dilatometric method, which could be utilized to elucidate the sludge dewatering performance at different moisture contents. The experimental results indicate that the sludge bound water measurement results from five methods are different, and the maximum data of 628% mass fraction of the sludge bound water (bound water/ dry water) measurement result is obtained from filtration test whereas the minimum data of 34% from sorption isotherms test. The dilatometric method is preferable to the other methods due to its rapid operation and easy processing of raw experimental data. When the sludge moisture content (moisture/ dry solid) is larger than 183%, better dewatering performance can be achieved by slightly increasing of the strength of dewatering device.

污泥结合水测量方法和水分分布特性

为了实现污泥高效脱水,对污泥水分分布特征与脱水性能变化的关系进行研究.分别利用热干燥法、抽滤法、压滤法、水活度法和膨胀计法测定同一市政污泥的结合水相对质量分数,通过分析比较测量数据和应用原理,总结出各种方法的优缺点和适用条件.基于膨胀计法对污泥水分能量状态进行了分析,构建了污泥水分分布特征曲线,并阐明污泥在不同水分质量分数时的机械脱水效果.研究表明:5种方法的结合水质量分数(结合水/干基)测量结果差异明显,其中抽滤法测量值最大为628%,水活度法测量值最小,只有34%;膨胀计法操作快捷、原始数据容易处理,优于其余4种测量方法.当污泥水分相对质量分数(全水分/干基)大于183%时,适当提高设备的脱水强度能够较好地改善脱水效果.
