Abstract

The research aims at verifying and comparing the applicability of four typical weighting methods of the speech transmission index (STI) for assessing speech intelligibility (SI) of chinese mandarin in rooms. Through subjective tests and sound field measurements under a series of different listening conditions, correlations between the SI of chinese and STIs calculated with the four weighting methods were studied. The regression analysis shows that there exists good positive correlation between the SI and the four STIs. The standard deviations of three order polynomial fits between the SI and the four STIs are near to the possibly minimum values of the standard deviation reached when the weighting factors vary, and away from the maximum values of the standard deviation, which showing the four STIs have good property for assessing SI of chinese in rooms. And the comparison with some other research results involving different objective metrics and languages also shows that the precision of the four STIs for assessing chinese speech intelligibility in rooms is within good range.
