The light-pipe illumination system design for double-lamp projector

In order to improve the light utilization efficiency and illumination uniformity of the light-pipe illumination system in double-lamp projector, a method for design optimization of light-pipe illumination system was presented. In this method, the maximum angle of the emergence ray from the light-pipe which can be used in the system was obtained first according to the principle of Etendue conservation. By this angle, the system maximum light utilization efficiency with a real light source was calculated. After analyzing the light efficiency of different size of light-pipes,the best matching relationship between the image panel size, lightpipe size and NA was obtained. Based on this method, a digital light processon (DLP) double-lamp illumination projection system was designed and set up. The experimental test results show that the illumination system designed by this method has higher energy efficiency and uniformity, and the test results agree well with the theoretical analysis.
