Abstract A distinct and growing trend towards mechatronic solutions involving local intelligence is now also emerging in the pump industry. The level of integration of mechatronic drive systems is already remarkably high and will continue to increase in future. The higher capital expenditure for variable-speed integral drives pays off in reasonable periods of time thanks to a reduction in energy input and more favourable operating characteristics.
