Abstract The dynamic equations of a rotor-bearing system with pedestal looseness and rubbing were established on the basis of the nonlinear oil film force and linear rubbing model. The random response of rotor-bearing system was systematically investigated by matrix differential theory, second order moment technique, matrix perturbation and Kronecker algebra. Moreover, research on the reliability for rubbing in rotor-bearing system was conducted by statistical fourth moment method and Edgeworth series technique. Numerical results are also presented and the reliability curve is offered.
