Abstract The concept of multi-cell manufacturing system is proposed from the viewpoint of layout design, and thus all layout problems of various manufacting systems can be converted into layout design problem of multi-cell manufacting system, which includes two aspects—machine layout and cell layout. For the former aspect, a solution strategy combining optimization modeling with virtual reality technique is presented; for the later aspect, an integrated layout design methodology is proposed, which includes an integrated layout model and a hybrid solution algorithm.
