Abstract Against the background of overcapacity inside the railway industry，the ongoing privatisation of the railway carrier and the therefore caused concentration on first costs by the customers， the authors describe the design to cost process and its integration in a superior targetcosting process at the example of a regional train bogie from the bogie division of ADtranz Daimler Chrysler Rail Systems GmbH．The focus of the displayed approach lies on the proceeding andthe activities which has been carried out to achieve the given target price for the bogies of a regional train．
