Abstract：It is crucial to clarify the connotation controversy of the knowledge society from the perspective of historical materialism, analyze the operating mechanism of the knowledge society, and look forward to the development effects of the knowledge society. From the perspective of connotation confirmation, the key elements of a knowledge society include knowledge workers, knowledge resources, and knowledge productivity, which are characterized by purposefulness and regularity, abstraction and concreteness, necessity and contingency. Based on the analysis of labor value theory, the operating mechanism of knowledge society can be summarized as follows: knowledge workers use knowledge resources to create knowledge productivity, where knowledge workers and knowledge resources are subject object relationships, knowledge workers and knowledge productivity are creative relationships, and knowledge resources and knowledge productivity are transformational relationships. From the perspective of development effects, the knowledge society, as an important characteristic of future society, will bring profound changes to both material production and social life. The theoretical research on the knowledge society also provides useful insights for China's practice.
