Abstract This paper summarized several function and behavior representation methods for mechatronic products, in which these methods were classified according to both semantic and syntactic representation schemes. It was proposed that “natural language sentences” could be used to represent not only function but also behavior, and the “input\|output flow” could be either “flow of object (i.e. energy, material and signal)” or “flow of action (physical interaction)”. Furthermore, the feasibility of these representation methods for different types of design problems were discussed. Finally, future research prospects were proposed.
