Abstract The tooth facial line of spiral bevel gears is the key geometric element in design and manufacture, and meantime it is one of the crucial considerations in design of spiral bevel gear machining tool. This paper began with the basic definition of pitch lines, and by combining the machining principle of Gleason spiral bevel gears; the pitch line equation of single spiral bevel gear was deduced. The conclusion that the pairing two pitch lines of spiral bevel gear contacted continuously during transmission was quantitatively proved. It provides a method for researching contact track and contact state of spiral bevel gears.
