Abstract By taking designing environmentfriendly products as the objective, a new method of product ECO-design was proposed, which mapped ECO-design strategies (SEDs) to environmental assessments (EA). The way how to apply this method to the process of the initiation of product design concept was presented and by taking a manual capping machine as an instance, the advantages of this method in specific product design was demonstrated. By adopting the matrix of EA, the SEDs were better classified and refined. And according to importance degree of every SED on different products, special guidance design could be achieved．
