USE OF SOLUBILITY PARAMETERS OF VEHICLES TO PREDICT PERCUTANEOUS PERMEABILITY COEFFICIENT OF TESTOSTERONE THROUGH RAT SKIN

The effects of vehicles with different solubility parameters on the percutaneous penetration of testosterone were investigated. The solubility of testosterone in various vehicles and the fluxes through rat abdomen skin were determined. Values for experimental permeability coefficient(p) corresponding to the respective fluxes were also determined. These values were then compared with those for the respective partition coefficient(k) which were calculated from the known solubility parameters for the vehicles(δv(n)), testosterone(δi), and skin(δs). There was a good correlation between the values for theoretical logk-4.589 and experimental logp for the delivery of testosterone.

THE ANTIOXIDATIVE EFFECT OF SOYBEAN ISOFLAVONES

The antioxidative activity of soybean isoflavone extract was observed in high peroxidative mouse model induced by adriamycin(ADR). Mice was administered with 5 mg/kg ADR ip once every four days four times in two weeks. Soybean isoflavone extract was administered orally each day for 14 d. Soy beau isoflavone extract at dose of 200 mg/kg increased SOD activities in mouse erythrocytes, liver and heart by 97.0%, 42.0% and 97.0% respectively. At the dose of 50 mg/kg soybean isoflavone increased SOD activities in erythrocyte, liver and heart by 88.0%,33.0%and 46.0% respectively. The GSH-px activities in heart were increased by 122.3% and 99.4% in the two treated groups. GSH levels in liver were increased by 69.0% and 44.0% respectively. LPO levels in plasma, liver and heart were lowered by 26.5%,20.1%and 17.9% in group 3 and by 13.0%, 4.4% and 16.0% in group 4. The results suggested that soybean isoflavone extract demonstrated antioxidative activities.

EFFECTS OF POLLUTION BY PYRITE MINING WASTE WATER ON THE RENAL FUNCTION OF INHABITANTS

We studied the renal function of inhabitants in polluted and control areas. The results indicated that NAG, RBP and cadmium in urine of polluted groups were higher than those in control group. Such factors as the time of residence in polluted area, and cadmium in urine were found to be associated with the renal function of inhabitants. It was illustrated that the waste water drained from the pyrite mine exerted adverse effects on inhabitants' health. We suggest that appropriate measures should be taken in the polluted areas to protect environment.

This paper compared the results of determination of Ipriflavone(IP) by HPLC and UVmethods. The linear correlation was observed for the concentrations from 2 to 100μg/ml(r=0.9999) by HPLC, and from 2 to 24μg/ml(r=0.9990) by UV. The RSD within day and between days was >2.0%. The minimum detectable limit was 0.15% for HPLC and 0.5% forUV. The results of the two methods were concordant. HPLC method had better sensibility andselectivity, and the linear range was more broad, while UV method was more convenient andrapid in operation.

RESEARCH ON HEMODYNAMICS OF CHILDREN WITH VENTRICULAR SEPTAL DEFECT BY DETERMINATION OF PULMONARY BLOOD FLOW VELOCITY USING PULSED WAVE DOPPLER

The pulmonary artery peak velocity(Vp) and pulmonary artery mean velocity(Vm) in 46 and 41 children with ventricular septal defect(VSD) were measured by pulsed wave Doppler(PWD)respectively. The result were compared with the ratio of pulmonary and systemic blood flow(Qp/Qs) measured with cardiac catheterization. We found that both pulmonary artery Vp and pulmonary artery Vm measured by PWD were positively correlated with Qp/Qs measured by cardiac catheterization(r=0.74, P<0.01,?=0.7682+1.8944x;r=0.82,P<0.01,?=0.6021+3.59x respectively). The method of determining pulmonary artery Vm and pulmonary artery Vp with PWD was found to be specially suitable for infants in aorta and pulmonary diameters <1.0 cm. According to the pulmonary vascular resistance(PVR) from cardiac catheterization, 16 cases of large VSD were divided into two groups:low PVR(n=10) and high PVR(n=6). The pulmonary artery VP and pulmonary artery Vm in the two groups were significantly different(P<0.01). It provided a diagnostic basis for increased PVR in patients with large VSD.

The EEG of 15 patients with schizophrenia were analysed by the method of nonlinear dynamics. In comparison with those of 20 normal subjects, the results showed that EEG of schizophrenia patients was in a unstable chaotic state from the point of view of nonlinear dynamics. It was discovered that the characteristics of EEG was different in various functional states and there was an inverted phenomenon in message transferring parameters of schizophreniaEEG. These features might be useful in EEG analysis and diagnosis for schizophrenia.

The assessment of cardiac damage by echocardiography was made in 20 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy confirmed by clinical study. Compared with normal subjects,patients with dilated cardiomyopathy had severe abnormality in cardiac strugture, function, wall stress and LVEDP.The statistical analysis revealed positive correlation between EDV and LVMW, r=0.84(P<0.001) and negative correlation between SWI and SVR,r=-0.73(P<0.01);EDσ and RWT,r=-0.70(P<0.001); ESσ and FS, r=-0.46(P<0.05). It demonstrated:1. Dilated cardiomyopathy had a higher preload(EDV) with afterload(ESσ) mismatched,which could play an important role in accelerating the disease. 2. Relative wall thickness decrease could lead to increase of left ventricular wall stress which indicated that hypertrophy of the heart muscle did not compensate enough. 3. LVEDP of DCM was higher.

THE FEATURE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF MILD AND MODERATE PRIMARY HYPERTENSION AND RENAL HYPERTENSION IN AMBULATORY BLOOD PRESSURE

To explore the regularity of nyctohemeral rhythm of blood pressure, the ambulatory blood pressure was monitored in 25 patients of mild and moderate primary hypertension and 25 patients of renal hypertension. The results showed that the systolic and diastolic blood pressure was decreased by 11.4±7.6%(2.18±1.39 kPa) and 13.5±9.1%(1.67±1.11 kPa) respectively at night in patients with mild and moderate primary hypertension. For patients of renal hypertension, blood pressure was decreased by 2.6±7.0%(0.58±1.45kPa) and 3.7±8.2%(0.46±1.06 kPa) respectively at night. The differences between two types of hypertension were statistically significant. It can be concluded that there is a nyctohemeral rhythm of blood pressure in mild and moderate primary hypertension, but the rhythm of blood pressure is less prominent in renal hypertension. This characteristic may help to distinguish mild and moderate primary hypertension from renal hypertension.

A total of 1362 nonfermenter strains was isolated from pathological samples(such as sputum, urine, wounds, blood and others) and collected during a period from June 1994 to June 1996. Isolates were identified as nonfermenters based upon Disk diffusion and Vitek-Ams system test. The resistance rates of ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, norftoxacin, imipenem, cefoperazone/sulbactam and polymyxin B against strains of nonfermenters were accepted. The resistance rates of others were high(over 40%). The results are helpful in selecting antibiotics for clinical use.
