Objective:To evaluate the clinical value of vertical axillary incision in surgical management of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in children.Methods:From March 1989 we to December 1998 adopted vertical axillary incision in 195 cases of infants and children with PDA in thoracotomies.There were 67 cases of operations through extrapleural approach and 128 cases through intrapleural approach.Results:All patients were operated on successfully.The technique of muscle-sparing thoracotomy provided excellent cosmetic healing.Conclusion:This incision is short and hidden with an adequate exposure of intrathoracical structure.The technique can be used extensively in infants and children.
