Twenty eight cases of pancreatic carcinomas and 7 cases of islet cell tumors were studied by means of 9 different neuroendocrine(NE) markers with the PAP method. Five cases(17.9%) with chromogranin positive were detected in pancreatic carcinomas,among which 2 were foune to have positive hormones,one for serotonin,glucagon and pancreatic polypeptide and another for pancreatic polypeptide. Positive NE cells were found in 5 cases (71.4%) of islet cell tumors,among which 3 cases were hormone positive(1 for pancreatic polypeptide,2 for serotonin,insulin,gastrin,glucagon and pancreatic polypeptide).Results showed a higher incidence of NE cells in well-differentiated carcinomas than in poorly differentiated ones (P<0.05).No statistic differences were observed between moderately and well differentiated cancers and moderately and poorly differentiated ones(P>0.05).The incidence and clinicopathological significance of NE cells found in the tumors and usefulness of chromogranin in the diagnosis of neuroendocrine tumors are discussed.
