Using endothelial cells (EC), smooth muscle cells (SMC) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) isolated from rabbits, observed was the effect of EC and LDL on the proliferation and lipid metabolism of SMC. The results showed the following facts:① LDL could stimulate SMC proliferation but such effect could be climminated after the incubation of LDL with con fluent EC. ②Conditioned medium of sparse EC could promote the activity of LDL receptor and the accumulation of cholesterol within SMC. ③LDL and conditioned medium of confluent EC depressed the activity of LDL. receptor and decreased the accumulation of cholesterol in SMC. ④The incubation of confluent EC decreased the binding activity to SMC of LDL rece por. The data indicated that effects on lipid metabolism of SMC and proliferation of SMC dif fered with the growing state of EC.
