Numerical methods were used to improve a four-cylinder engine body vibro-acoustic performance. Based on finite element theory, the engine body finite element model, multi-body dynamics model and acoustic model were established. Multi-body dynamics and fluid mechanics were used to calculate the engine dynamic load. Structural dynamics was used to calculate the engine body dynamic response. Acoustic method was used to calculate the engine body acoustic performance. All the calculated results were validated by experiments. Based on those results, the critical frequency of engine body was found. Hence, the engine body was redesigned to avoid resonance. After improvement, the NVH performance of engine body was recalculated. The results showed that, the radiated sound power level was reduced 0.9 dBA through optimized design.
